Just to clarify: I was talking about mainstream America, which I lazily called "white america". I was thinking about stuff you might hear on the mainstream rock stations.

That's not what I said. I said that the American audience was familiar with 
blues because American bands, including Captain Beefheart, regularly 
included Blues as part of their sets. It was part of the musical landscape.
