as a friend and collaborator with loren connors, i have this to say.  he was 
not drunk as he neither drinks, smokes, and is a strict vegetarian.  
probably what he had that evening was a very strong grapefruit juice...

the reason for his holding his ears is not out of disrespect but because of 
tinnitis.  Tinnitus (head noise) is a common occurrence for many people, and 
may occur in many forms. It may be intermittent or constant, mild or severe, 
and vary from a low roar to a high-pitched type of sound. It may be 
subjective (audible only to the patient) or objective (audible to others).
