Well, I entirely endorse the previous poster in hoping - nay, knowing - that this is just a silly unsubstantiated rumour.

But the thought does strike me - how would the wider world actually know that he had died? Our first hints would probably be that the releases dried up, maybe people didn't get their CDs when writing to Corwood. Given the nature of his secrecy, I would be surprised to say the least if there was a formal announcement or anything which in anyway publicised his death.
