i can understand both arguments.  


let's see ... please allow me to be cliche and blatant for one moment. if we're going post 8 december, 1980, the day john lennon was removed from this earthly plan by a nitwit lump, stalking and hunting seems less cool.  syd barrett started appreciating it even less, post lennon. 

um ... jerry lewis, sandra bernhard and robert de niro in 'the king of comedy' also had a big imprint on me, in terms of how freakish it is to be "hunted" by fan(atics). 

furthermore, there is the texas monthly article, from 1999, wherein jandek/stirling smith enjoyed conversing, drinking beer and spending an afternoon with reporter katy vine but said that there is to be no more of this hunting.  

so, it is a good point that "sightings" or rather "hunting" type of email messages posted to a jandek discussion list aren't offensive or irrelevant, per se,     BUT  ...

I don't support the whole "let's hunt down Jandek" thing either, but I think it's a little fascist to ban those posts from the list. I point to the oldest argument against censorship- If you don't want to read it, don't. I always thought the moderator was supposed to scan for irrelevant, obscene, or spam posts, not choose what he thinks we should discuss and ban the rest. But Seth owns the list and had the right to do what he pleases, so all you gumshoes'll have to find another site.

Ultimately, it's irrelevant. I believe him when he says that "Sterling Smith is not Jandek." That's why (this post excepted, since it is a response) I don't reference Smith. Reference Corwood or Jandek.
