can definitely recommend "sell heal holler", "banknotes dreams and signatures" ("salt lumps" is one of their best songs), and "wine can't do it, wife won't do!". although the residents were already around, i heard caroliner first and kinda found the residents a bit of a letdown after that. caroliner also has released more consistently good music.
caroliner is one of only a handful of bands that reach that "wholly other" plateau then set up a shack there. maybe only them, jandek, and sam esh on that particular portion of the frontier (all of 'em got that rural vibe that seems like the only thing that holds them to earth).
a friend of mine used to do his homework to jandek and caroliner. his roommate once walked in and stood listening for a minute before yelling, "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!", then left for two days.
