I called the Corwood number a few days ago after Seth posted about Graven Image being reissued, and left a message seeking confirmation (not that I doubted Seth, but I thought that the inquiry might prompt a reply).  Unfortunately, my cell battery died out, but when I recharged it, two messages from Corwood were left, the first confirming the reissue of Graven Image, and the second a response to a message I left several months ago.  The older message I left inquired about the possibility of reissuing Graven Image on vinyl, since it had never been issued on vinyl, and whether Corwood would do so if somebody (or a collective entity) put up a big chunk of cash for him to do a run of 1000+ copies.  Well, in the second voicemail I received, the caller (Jandek?) mentioned that he recognized from his 'notes' that I had called several months ago inquiring about the vinyl option, and simply replied that 'we don't deal in vinyl any longer.'

anyway, the caller had a pretty deep voice, older-sounding, sort of like the voice on the spoken word albums (I could see both speakers being the same individual), and also sounding like the occassional other vocalist on the older records, or like the singer on "I Passed by the Building."

anyway, thought the above may be of interest to some.  the caller ended the messages in a very polite way, and instructed me to call back with any further questions.  interesting.

Hey, list...

Apologies for the length of this message... feel free to skim.

We sent Corwood a copy of the film about a month and a half ago, very eager to hear any comments they might have about it.  We were all but sitting on the mailbox.

Then... nothing.

We were afraid that Corwood didn't like it.  We had warned them that they might take issue with the last few minutes of the film... I think our letter said something to the effect of  (paraphrasing liberally)  "we certainly don't want you to feel betrayed by the ending of the film, it was not our intention to overstep our bounds."

For the longest time there was no reply, and we were sure that they had taken some offense.  As filmmakers, we were very sure that we had fulfilled any expressed or implied promise we ever made, so on that level, we didn't feel awful... but on another level, we certainly didn't want to ruffle feathers at Corwood.  Then we got a letter.

We tore the letter open excitedly, it was the latest CD re-issue with pricelist.  No note.  This was quite strange.  Our working theory at that point was that they hadn't watched the film, or perhaps didn't like the film, but were continuing sending CDs as a m atter of courtesy.

Then we got "the letter." (as follows)

Chad F,

There didn't seem anything to not like about it.  It didn't seem intrusive, exploitive or disadvantageous.  It did not seem unfair.  It did not seem a betrayal, by anyone.

It did seem to have a satisfying conclusion.  We understand it's there for the film.  As it should be.

Surprised...  yes.  It strikes the heart.  We really did't know so much.  Now we do.  Congratulations and best wishes.

(no signature)

Of course, this was entirely heartwarming and a huge relief.  The fact that Corwood appears to be happy with the film is an important part of why our excitement of the project is so unqualified.  It would appear at first blush that we might've made the omelet without breaking the proverbial eggs (fingers crossed).

Just couldn't resist sharing it with the list.

Paul

Then again, bearing in mind Katy Vine's article, from what we know, at any given moment he's just as likely to be in a bar with his besuited friends as at home staring at the wall. Corwood's reaction to the documentary would suggest surprise at the range of views on, and extent of appreciation of the music, which is understandable seeing that the mailing list has to date been almost the only evidence of this. As regards the popularity of the music, it will always be a cult phenomenon due to it's extreme dissonance and - hey! - utter undanceablity. I expect the film will trigger a big rise in record sales, but I couldn't see Jandek selling even as much as the most popular noise artists. The fact that the lyrics are such a big part of the songs also probably limits his appeal to English speakers (anyone out there ever bought a Kan Mikami solo cd?). "Ready for the House" was optimistically pressed in a run of 1000 - I reckon that after the film this might be a realistic proposition for future releases. Then again maybe I'm being optimistic here... Paul Condon _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Got Jandek 0772 in the mail two days ago.

Title:  "The Place"

Tracklist:

1.  The Picture (9:25)
2.  The Place  (7:03)
3.  The Highway  (6:28)
4.  The Answer  (4:31)
5.  The Stumble  (8:55)

Cover:  Either a double-exposure, or some sort of "shop window" effect.  Three 'female' mannequins (well, one of them looks kind of... nah) are arrayed across the front... an English Tudor building takes up the upper right third of the frame.  Could very well be Europe, again.

The Songgss:  Gave it a listen last night while reading.  As always happens, the Jandek competed with my ability to read so I had to kind of try to block the Jandek out and force it into the background (to mixed success).  The snippits of lyrics/imagery/vocals that slipped through my guard seemed interesting and portentous.  Musically, no discernable breaks in (recent) form.

I'll have to give it a proper listen tonight.

We know for definite that "I Threw You Away" was a Cork location. Someone also suggested to me that "the Humility" location was similar to a part of suburban Cork. The brewery is the only such tudor style building in the city, and I doubt that there are few anywhere juxtaposed with ugly industrial structures like this. The cover photograph could also be taken from the back of the building, and though I haven't been there in a while, the large structure on the right is definitely familiar. There's also the possibility of refurbishment, especially as the brewery changed hands a few years ago. Anyway, if this is the correct location, my Cork friends will confirm it eventually... meanwhile here's some more links for y'all to chew on... www.newmediarepublic.com/ cork/beamish.html davespicks.com/.../vacation1999/ hiimages/Cork02Beamish.jpg _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Not that I'm suggesting you should've tried to do a Jandek impression -- his sing-speak is pretty inimitable -- but it's just enlightening (though I guess it shouldn't really be surprising) to realize how much of Jandek's sound comes from Jandek's voice, despite the fact that most people tend to focus more on the microtonal guitar, at least at first. -- Phil Delivered-To: jandek@zappa.cs.northwestern.edu Received: (qmail 21006 invoked from network); 15 Aug 2003 21:27:42 -0000 Received: from mail1.cs.nwu.edu (HELO mail1.cs.northwestern.edu) (129.105.100.4) by zappa.cs.nwu.edu with SMTP; 15 Aug 2003 21:27:42 -0000 Received: from dylan.cs.northwestern.edu ([129.105.100.5]) by mail1.cs.northwestern.edu with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.5329); Fri, 15 Aug 2003 16:27:37 -0500 Received: (from tisue@localhost) by dylan.cs.northwestern.edu (8.11.6/8.11.6) id h7FLRaP15043 for jandek@cs.northwestern.edu; Fri, 15 Aug 2003 16:27:36 -0500 Received: (qmail 20800 invoked from network); 15 Aug 2003 21:16:41 -0000 Received: from mail1.cs.nwu.edu (HELO mail1.cs.northwestern.edu) (129.105.100.4) by zappa.cs.nwu.edu with SMTP; 15 Aug 2003 21:16:41 -0000 Received: from mail-out2.apple.com ([17.254.0.51]) by mail1.cs.northwestern.edu with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.5329); Fri, 15 Aug 2003 16:16:36 -0500 Received: from mailgate1.apple.com (A17-128-100-225.apple.com [17.128.100.225]) by mail-out2.apple.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h7FLGCfR018598 for ; Fri, 15 Aug 2003 14:16:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: from scv1.apple.com (scv1.apple.com) by mailgate1.apple.com (Content Technologies SMTPRS 4.2.1) with ESMTP id for ; Fri, 15 Aug 2003 14:16:08 -0700 Received: from [17.104.170.40] (dhcp1710417040.corp.apple.com [17.104.170.40]) by scv1.apple.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h7FLGGsH015671 for ; Fri, 15 Aug 2003 14:16:16 -0700 (PDT) User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.1.1.2418 Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2003 16:15:09 -0500 Subject: Wha? To be in the hipper-than-thou crowd, one must be able to rattle off band names, members and arcane historical anecdotes. Syd Barrett is cool, but Edward Ka-Spel is perhaps cooler because he is more obscure than the Pink Floyd founding member is. For that matter, Texas weirdo Jandek is cooler yet for the same reasons. The difference between Barrett and his progeny, though, is that Jandek and Ka-Spel often seem to be merely emulating the original 1960s acid casualty. It is sometimes difficult, therefore, to escape a nasty critical feedback loop: Where does emulation end and originality begin?" i'm not TOO familiar with syd barret, but from what i've heard i don't hear a similarity. Thoughts on the subject? the rest of the article can be read by going here: http://www.newsreview.com/issues/sacto/2003-08-14/clubber.asp incidentally, jackson griffeth, who writes for the same rag, and who used to write for the magazine "pulse," also mentioned jandek last month. Both writers seem to be kind of forcing Jandek into their articles, just for the sake of mentioning him. This shouldn't be read as a dish on griffeth though, since he's one of the few good music journalists out there. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Jandek is certainly not "emulating Barrett", and as with many artists who can be compared to him, it's hard to tell if any similarities are mere coincidence, or whether Jandek is aware of him. Having said that, I don't see a direct influence, though songs like "Dark Globe" (from Barrett's "The Madcap Laughs") would fit snugly beside Jandek on a compilation tape. >re: The Place, WHAT”S WITH THAT COVER?! Well if it's any help, I asked a Cork native for his opinion, and though he admitted that it definitely wasn't the front of the Beamish brewery in Cork, agreed with me that it could concievably be the back. This theory will be proved or ruled out before long... Some of you may remember me requesting submissions for a 99-track comp, which features a couple of people on this list - it's now available from Forced Exposure. Here's their blurb: VA: Grain CD (DOT 003 CD). "99 track compilation of short tracks made exclusively for this release. These are not edits of longer pieces but complete tracks in themselves. Gang,

Sorry about the lack of updates on the website... We've been very busy trying to keep all the festival balls in the air (to mixed success).  We've gone through and clarified quite a bit on the site, go ahead and check it out, if you'd like.

We are not going to the Toronto International Film Festival.

We ARE going to the Leeds International Film Festival.  European Jandek fans are finally getting the props they diserve.  A copy of our press release follows the end of this email.

We're looking for people in and around Leeds that might help us do promotion.  We can't promise you any money or even accomodations... but we'll funnel any perks/freebies that we get your way... give you a thank you in the DVD box... anything we can afford.

Anyone who wants to help out/put up a tired filmmaker for a night or two will be thanked severely.  Please email jandocumentary@hotmail.com

Many thanks...
Paul Fehler

Jandek on Corwood to premiere at 17th annual

Leeds International Film Festival

Columbia, MO -- August 19th, 2003  -- Director Chad Freidrichs is pleased to announce that his feature length documentary film Jandek on Corwood will make its world premiere at the prestigious Leeds International Film Festival.

The 17th annual Leeds International Film Festival will take place on October 2 – 12, 2003.

Jandek on Corwood is an 89-minute documentary about the legendary iconoclast, Jandek, from Houston, Texas.  Jandek has released 35 albums of twisted, atonal blues/folk over the last 25 years, and has been lauded for his singularly unique output by the independent music community.

Next to nothing is known about the recluse, and Jandek on Corwood represents the most comprehensive effort to document the man and his music.

Several noteworthy Jandek fans and scholars were interviewed for the documentary, chronicling the bizarre efforts of the mysterious musician.

Jandek has asked the filmmakers to convey to the press his unavailability to comment on the film, and declines to provide contact information.

Shelbyville, in the world of the Simpson's cartoon, is a neighboring town with which Springfield has a long standing rivalry (according to info I found on a Simpson's fan site). Also, It might be good to note that Springfield itself seems to have been chosen as a name for the Simpson's home town specifically because it is such a common town name found in the United States. Searches on "Shelbyville" also turn up a similar preponderance of hits for multiple towns across the nation. I'd say, rather, that Jandek's "Shelbyville" and Groening's "Shelbyville" just happen to be coincidental occurrences of a popular American town name. -Aerick "aSMm" Duckhugger ----Original Message Follows---- From: Daniel Marks To: jandek@cs.northwestern.edu Subject: simpsons/jandek connection? Songs are frequently credited to artists who did not do them, in order to boost the download. Example, some kid did a lame parody of a ricky martin song. he puts it up on kazaa and says it's by weird al. next thing you know, someone thinks they've found a lost weird al song, and it's being swapped like mad. This is probably the same thing. some guy made jandek-like recordings, and put them up as jandek to get all of us to listen to it. What strikes me as odd is why he'd pick jandek...maybe he's just a bad musician.
